When someone talks about say a '73 Fender, does that refer to the actual year it was built (i.e. a '73 would be a 31 year old bass now), or does it refer to a particular model of bass (which presumably was first created in 1973) which may have been produced at any time after?

    Apologies if this sounds dumb..

That would definitely be one made in '73 - they have been making the same two models since the 60s and you can tell from serial numbers which year any bass was built.

The exception is where they have "re-issues" - which are specified by year - so a '62 Reissue - but it is always clear then that it is not a bass built in 62 and the title is specifically a reissue.

Thanks very much, that's helped clear things up a lot for me!
