question about my bass's body wood...

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by Rafterman, Jan 15, 2002.

  1. i bought a used G&L L-2000 about 6 months or so ago, and i was never really sure what kind of body wood it is made out of.

It's got a premier finish on it (transparent blonde)...but I seem to remember the guy telling me that it was alder...

It looks a lot like swamp ash, in that it has long very visible grain lines on it. It also is very heavy
    (a characteristic of swamp ash).

I'll post a pic of the bass soon...but for now, what kind of wood does it sound like?

  2. "Grain lines" sounds like ash to me.

The L2500 in the avatar at left is solid Ash.

Weight, about 376 pounds, give or take a few.

I should add that I believe my bass is Northern ash rather than swamp ash. Swamp ash is not heavy. (Ever pick up a Tobias?) In fact, it is quite light. However, northern ash is very heavy.

I meant to say Ash not Maple, duh. THat's why it's best to go to the source.

Anyone know if the natural finish Swamp ash P-Bass would be lighter than the alder finished body - I was of the belief it would probably weigh a bit more or is it variable from axe to axe?

Yep. Maybe I should have kept the old avatar for the sake of memories, but since I don't have the bass anymore, I changed it. Plus I wanted to display my new best friend.

Yes that is a Modulus Q5.
