Ok, so I've been dabbling in speaker design and the port dimensions calculated always end up being 6, 7, or more inches. Yet I look at commercially built cabs and the ports never seem to be longer than an inch. What gives? Do their ports serve a different purpose?

Nope; they work just the same as any other ports.

It's really handy to design your ports to be 3/4" long and when you use 3/4" baffle boards, all you have to do is cut a hole!

The problem is (as you have noticed) is that if the port is big enough to not chuff, and 3/4" long, it tunes the cabinet pretty high for a bass guitar.

If you start measuring cabinets and studying how most cabinets are tuned, it will motivate you to conduct some experiments on your own.
