question 'bout power amps

About a month ago I posted about my quandery with a need for a more powerful bass rig. I've got $1000 and I need something powerful enough to gig with a ska band in clubs - my 275 at 4 ohms GK isn't powerful enough. It was suggested that I should maybe look into getting a preamp, a power amp, and a couple of cabinets. My question is, for a setup like this do you need a special power amp for a bass, or just a normal one like you would buy to put through a mixer or something. Any help is, as always, greatly appreciated.

My recommendation is get another cab. Seriously, what are you using for a cab? You can go up to 1000W and only get marginally louder. If you add more speakers, you will definitely get louder.

A good quality PA power amp will do just as good or better than a bass specific power amp. My personal preference would be a QSC.

Go Crest. LT1000. you'll never look back. So deep. so full. so inexpensively priced compared to other less quality power amps..Oh yeah
