Hello, I'm planning on ordering a Dingwall ABZ in the next few days and I am having some last minute decisions regarding the available options: 1) Is the preamp upgrade worth it (2-band and/or 3-band)? I played an ABII and the passive pickups sounded awesome but was unable to test the active pickups. 2) Also, same situation with the Hipshot D-Tuner option. I'm going with the 5-string so I'm wondering how well the Hipshot cooperates with the B-string. I'd be fine with just a standard model but also think it might be worth it to make the bass a little more "unique." Thank you in advance, Derek
You will have better luck if you post this in the Dingwall Owner's thread. I have a Super J5 that I love and a Super P5 scheduled to arrive November. In my case, I was told that most run the pre amps in passive mode almost all of the time and therefore pre amps were unnecessary. I do not know if this same info applies to the ABx owners. Kind of comparing apples to oranges here. I have no idea about the hipshot on the B. Post this in the thread. I am certain that a few people with step up with an opinion.
I have never owned either model you tested/are purchasing. My first Dingwall was a passive AB-I. I never felt the need for a preamp when playing it. I usually play my Super J's in active mode with the bass/treble controls on the detent, no boost or cut. The exception is my five string with P/J pickups - I cut the bass a little. No personal experience, but every report I've read from others is that the B strings detune well. Looking forward to pics of your new Dingwall!
Thanks, I think I've decided against the preamp (mostly because I can get a Darkglass B7K for the same price as the 3-band one), but I definitely will check out the owners group!
I've got an ABZ 5'er and it just works in passive (no active). Don't know about the Hipshot D-tuner option. Fire off an email to Dingwall -- they will respond. See what they say.
