Question on cabinet power ratings

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by peteroberts, Apr 13, 2003.

  1. what part does the enclosure, if any, have on the power rating of a cab? Or is it just the speakers...i.e. I have a cab 'rated' at 200w in which I replaced the speaker with one rated at 400w. So is my cabinet now rated at 400w?

That's really up to the manufacturer of the cab.

They could choose to rate it as to the point where the drivers start to distort; this would include some cabinet tuning issues.

They could choose to rate it to the point where the drivers take physcial damage; this would also include some cabinet tuning issues.

They could choose to rate it to the point where the speakers take heat damage from the power; this is just raw data from the speaker manufacturer.

The last rating is the most common IMO.
