What are the differences between half rounds and tape wounds? Oh, and by the way, is it normal to have bass strings to last almost a year?
  2. Tapewounds are ...er......... wound with tape(!!!)

Halfrounds (or groundwounds) are roundwounds which are then polished or abraided to a flat surface.

I've had a set of Rototsound 55 Solo (Compression-wound) on my Jazz for about a year and am astonished at how bright they still are - so much so I've just bought a set for my main 5er.

Having said that, the Jazz is played sparingly and I do not lash sweat over my strings.

that depends on your taste, I keep mine until they go really dead, but there is nothing nicer than a new set, there is some guys here who change theirs very often, kinda every few weeks.
