Is there any way to tell if a certain tree is going to be bulred, flamed, quilted, spaulted, etc before you cut it down? Ive speculated that the bulbous masses i see here and there indicate burl. Thanks.

    You're right about burls.

Burls are projecting tumorlike masses on trunks. The root ball can also be burl, and may or may not be detectable as such.

Quilt may sometimes be seen through the bark if the bark is thin and the radial undulations are deep enough to push out the bark and be seen.

If I remember correctly, flame is a circumferential undulation and therefor cannot be seen before cutting.

I don't believe birdseye can be seen before cutting either.

You can check what I've just stated and educate yourself about it by reading this.
