how can you tell if your bass has nickel or stainless strings,i purchased an ibanez btb 5 string 2+ months ago and dont know what the strings are? they are great sounding with plenty of low end ,and also after i play awhile my finger tips are grey? i am thinking they are nickel? but how can i tell... thnx in advance...

  2. they must be stainless.. nickels don't give off the grey stuff.

are they very light & shiny or a little darker grey ?

stainless feel more course, looks gray in color, and has a brighter tone than nickel.

Au contraire. Nickel plated strings are the ONLY ones that make your fingers gray. But not all nickels do it. Danelectro and GHS boomers do it, for instance. D'Addario XL's do not. I've never had stainless steel cause discoloration.
