Hi guys, i'm a double bassist looking to get a decent but not expensive bass for mostly big band playing purposes.. There are these two units: https://www.thomann.de/pt/marcus_miller_p7_alder_4_black_2nd_gen.htm https://www.thomann.de/pt/marcus_miller_p7_alder_4_aw_2nd_gen.htm they are 70 euros apart and i can't find any differences between them, can anyone help? p.s https://www.thomann.de/pt/marcus_miller_p7_alder_5_ts_2nd_gen.htm anyone has any positive feedback to provide on this one? p.p.s P basses or J basses for big bands? p.p.p.s can 5 string basses be tuned e-a-d-g-c ? ----------------------------- all of the previous questions have been answered! i now have these options to choose from, what would you recommend and why? options available: v7 1st gen 4 string swamp ash 325 euro v7 1st gen 5 string alder 340 euro v7 2nd gen 4 string fretless swamp ash 417 euro v7 2nd gen 4 string alder 460 euro v7 2nd gen 5 string 510 euro
No diffrence I can see between the two. P or J its your choice but the sire is PJ so plenty of sound options. all sires are good imo Yes can be tuned e a d g c
PJ is a Precision bass with a P (Precision) pickup and a J (Jazz) pickup instead of this, for example.
so if i understand correctly, the P bass has both a P pickup and a J pickup? that sounds like a better bang for the buck
The regular P has just the one pickup but the PJ has two like the Sires. Many love the PJ setup for its flexibility. The Sire P7s are a great deal, in my opinion - I have a 1st gen P7 5 string fretless that I love.
Not necessarily.......there's virtues to both J/J and P/J pickup configurations, especially with both pickups on.....You also have to ask yourself if you are going to utilize pickup selection and all those other options in your performance. I do, but I find I'm rare in that aspect.....A lot of times, a guy will get a bass and say how it has three pickups, active/passive options, series/parallel options, 90 band EQ, parametric equalizer, equametric paralyzer, switches, buttons, deflector shields, and a condom dispenser, and boast how the "bang for the buck" gets a zillion tones --but he/she will use one setting ("set it and forget it") the entire night.......Nothing wrong with this, of course, but you need to consider your approach as well....What I'm saying is: If you are a "set it and forget player", you may like the J/J tone setup better than P/J, or vise-versa.... (If using both pickups in variety/dance situations - which I do on about 90% of everything - I prefer J/J over P/J....I do like P/J for rock, though, but thats just me) V7 for me
The Sire P7 is a PJ setup: Couple that configuration with the best preamp under $1K (in my opinion) and you have a great bass! I haven't yet tried one of the 2nd gen either, those are even better than my 1st gen.
There are probably as many players who distinctly dislike PJs as there are bassists that love them. Seems to be somewhat of a love/hate phenomenon. Nothing wrong with the V7 though! (I have two, fretted and fretless pair of 5ers.)
thank you, @bholder and @BassmanM !! i have a nice price deal available for the V7 4 string and 5 string.. the P7 is about 80 euro more expensive than the J7, worth it? i'll use the EB in big bands only, jazz/blues playing..
It's hard to say, it's really a personal preference thing, but I understand you may not be able to try before buying? You really can't go wrong with that choice, either bass will fit right in anyplace a similar Fender would (which is pretty much any place at all).
There are a number of basic Fender body shapes...from left to right, P bass, Jazz bass, PJ with P body, PJ with Jazz body. (P pickup is the famous split pickup and J pickup is the single-coil used in Jazz basses. Sometimes they combine the two.
I have a few P-J basses as well....I prefer them for rock and harder styles.....for variety and dance-pop stylings/corporate bands/etc, I go J-J....but thats just me
sorry for the nuisance, but another question since i'm surrounded by experts.. what's the difference between roundwounds and flatwounds and what's "0.40" "0.45" and all those things i see in string packs?
