Quick opinions needed - Dimarzio Ultra J or Area J

Discussion in 'Pickups & Electronics [BG]' started by jcburn, Oct 3, 2013.

  1. Anyone experience both these pickups. Typically used for pickstyle rock and sometimes metal. Will be volume/tone only and will be bridge and neck 5 string set.
Will be used with always on mild overdrive too so wondering if either might be a bit harsh sounding.
Will try to cop tones from anywhere between Billy Gould from Faith No More to Newsted era Metallica, so typically more modern slightly overdriven sound (although obviously the overdrive will be supplied by a pedal!).
Thanks for any opinions and supporting coments.

  2. Not given as a choice , but I really like the original version in my fretless jazz with John East Retro J preamp.

Didn't have a chance to try both, but my Ultra Jazz are absolutely fantastic, you'll not regret it!

Ultra Jazz = mid scoop, as in smooth jazz, hi fi music, sounds good in your bedroom

Area J = greater mids, as in cuts through a live stage mix with a big-hitting drummer

IMO, it's easier to dial mids out than it is to dial them in.
