quick question on string setup

Discussion in 'Hardware, Setup & Repair [BG]' started by bpm2000, Dec 19, 2003.

  1. Been reading the link http://www.garywillis.com/pages/bass/bassmanual/relief.html#3 and screwin around with my bass, and was just wondering about the line "if after you lower the strings..." When testing the buzz on the frets, exactly how far down are you supposed to lower the strings? As far as it will go? Just to the point where it seems parallel with the fretboard?

  2. I am assuming you are refering to the intonation part of the setup?

As low as you like, without buzzing, this is also a personal preferance.

  3. Personal preference if you're trying to set your string height for playing purposes...

If you're trying to figure out the truss rod adjustments, I'd lower the strings until there is fret buzz. If it buzzes both above and below the 12th fret then your neck is good to go and you can raise the strings back to whatever height you like when playing.
  4. yes I meant for truss rod adjustments, my initial message wasn't that clear. thank you both!
