Racism and the media

Discussion in 'Off Topic [BG]' started by i_got_a_mohawk, Jul 23, 2012.

  1. race thread is gooooooooooooo!!

and now to read the article

  2. Not so much a race thread, as a race & the media thread :)

A few months back there was huge outrage in the media as a group of asian peadophiles was caught, bringing race and culture in as the causes, but a very similar case where a ring of white peadophiles was caught, barely made the news.

As said, just thought it was an interesting perspective (even if it is nothing new).

I think the Daily Mail creamed their collective pants when the Rochdale grooming story broke.

"WE WERE RIGHT ALL ALONG! WE TOLD YOU THEM FOREIGNERS WERE UP TO NO GOOD! SEND 'EM ALL BACK!"

Having lived in Derby, I can say with some assertion that there is an attitude amongst the white folk that the Pakistani community are always after 'their' white girls. I wasn't a parent at the time, but I know folks who still live there and do have kids....and that attitude still prevails.

Incidentally, I always thought the label 'Asian' was a bit of a hoot....isn't Asia, like, one enormous continent, not just Pakistan, India and Bangladesh? :)

Sometimes stuff like this has some very very tragic results (IE Rwanda). I was reading about that recently where the media there was slanted towards the Hutu's. They would run slanted stories against the Tutsi and the Twa peoples, in the end it helped pave the way for some horrible, utterly inhuman results. (Obviously it was a LOT more than just the media that led to the mass murdering but it sure as hell helped fan the flames.)
That's on the extreme end of the spectrum obviously, and here in the US at least you can find a variety of slants in the media (depending on the outlet/source) to fit your latest anger and outrage but you still wonder from a psychological perspective why that sort of thing is even necessary...?

  5. That's funny....out here all the pedophiles are middle-aged white guys. Dang, how am I supposed to get my lazy generalizations in order now????

  6. I agree completelly.

The Daily Mail crowd must have loved it, it's a sad that it's the second most popular news paper in the UK (behind the Sun :scowl: (both facts are wrong on so many levels) ).

You're right re-Asian comment, was just pinching it from the article, and it is a needless generalisation!

Is it the daily mail or mirror that has the topless chick on page 3? I forget.

You mean you've discovered a newspaper that reports in accordance with an agenda? Say it isn't so!

Middle England has just fainted at the thought of a nipple within their hallowed rag :)

You are thinking of Murdochs The Sun. A ghastly collection of cut and paste trash. The Mirror tends to have more left-wing leanings and is historically a more 'socialist' paper, though it's still a 'red top' tabloid.

Wow, having read both in London, that's truly depressing. I wouldn't wipe my *** with either one if they were the only scraps of paper around. If more Americans had read these two rags, they'd see US papers, which certainly have their own problems, aren't nearly so bad in comparison.

Most look pretty evenhanded in comparison to the Mail and the Sun.

  12. It is truely depressing. The one up side we have, is generally more balanced TV news.

Though many would love a Daily Mail Live over here (heck, would practically be Fox News!) :bag:

    That'd be the Sun.

Though the Daily Sport is a good source of softcore too :bag:
