Hi folks, I'm in the market for a top of the line class A direct box. according to Radial, their JDV is on par with the REDDI and Avalon U5. Has anyone had the chance to compare it to either of these side by side?

The Radial is an excellent DI, no doubt.

The REDDI is in a class by itself. I don't think anything is on par with it.

The Avalon is a really good unit, but I've seen less and less of them in the past few years. I don't know why.

I've always wanted to check out the JDV, it has some really neat-looking features. You won't go wrong buying it, no doubt.

But if you are looking for REDDI results (and have the checkbook to handle it!), it's the only way to go.

I've spent most of my time with the Countryman Type 85s (great unit), the Radial JDI (what I have at the moment), the Radial J48 (great, but I like to have no phantom power going on. Just me), and the REDDI (which the church owns). The REDDI made a drastic different in tone on my bass (listening with IEMs).

    Good luck.

Thanks. What intrigues me about the JDV is the clarity which Radial claims is like no other DI on the market. I won't have a chance to a/b them to the extent that I would like so all the feedback I can get helps. Thanks

What kind of bass are you playing through the reddi? I'm also a church player and I play a passive five string Lakland JO. I'm interested in the JDV because the laklAnd's natural sound is so good that I don't feel the need to color it. I am, however, also intrigued by what it would sound like with the coloration added by a reddi.

Advantage U5 in that case. Clear un colored and punchy as hell. And then you get to the tone shaping ... Or not... Situation depending. To date my fav though I have not messed with a REDDI, nor a JDV.

The J48, Countryman type 85, DBX-DI-12 (?) are all about equivalent. I use the Type 85's as active DI's for sound company use along with a single DBX. radial Pro Di's for my passives. I personally use a Bassbone in my bass rig. It is sort of a lynch pin item for me... Not sexy, incredibly useful...

I have 4 basses that I use here and there when playing at church. A Fender Jazz V, a Precision V, a Stingray V, and a 2000 MIM Fender Jazz V that I converted to fretless. There's three other players I don't know what all they use.

To my ear, I sensed an openess along with a warmth to the bass tone with the Reddi. ..

Dbx DB12 DI, I love mine, no colouration, just pure signal. Uses phantom power if that is an issue.

JDV is a good active DI box. REDDI is in a class by itself.

Geri and Jimmy- do you feel like the REDDI is actually better than than U5 and JDV or do you like its tone/ style better? If you believe it's actually a better unit then what makes it better?

I like it better for sure. The U5 is too smooth and pretty for me, and the JDV is your basic active direct box that has flat response but no "juice" to the tone. Is the REDDI better? It is for me because I like its tone better.

Talking about Radial DIs the Firefly is a better comparison to the REDDI than any of the J series boxes are.

I haven't played through one yet, but the Sonic Farm 2di4 sounds like it has low-end detail comparable to the REDDI's. The company has a bunch of clips here comparing the REDDI to the 2di4.

I don't know about the JDV but the Firefly is phenomenal.

I've said pretty much all I care to about the Reddi. I will buy one as soon as I can. I like what it does for bass. It is a clearer, warmer, more up-front sound to my ears. It's around $700, so it's not for everyone.

That's about all I care to say about it.

Here's a different set of comparison recordings with fretted P-bass:
    • Sonic Farm 2di4 (active tube combo DI/preamp)
    • Radial JDV (class A active)
    • Radial JDI (passive)
    http://www.talkbass.com/threads/sonic-farm-2di4.1078495/page-2#post-16649886

I've owned and gigged two REDDI's. The REDDI is a very nice DI, one of the best. But I like the performance and versatility of the Sonic Farm 2di4 much more ... its "triode" mode sounds just like REDDI, and its "pentode" mode sounds way nicer. Plus it can be used as a preamp and REDDI cannot. Back on topic, the JDV is also a superb DI. It was my preferred DI for acoustic bass until I bought the Sonic Farm 2di4 (which I like much better). However a new Sonic Farm 2di4 will set you back about $800 including shipping so the JDV provides better price performance since you can get a used model for about $275-300. The JDV is much more compact so it is easier to schlep around to gigs etc. All of this is excellent gear. The JDV is an top notch performer at an excellent price point.

Hi Ukiah, did you use the JDV on upright with what pickup? I am looking for experiences with the Fishman Full Circle, thanks. the Sonic Farms looks great but out of range.

No, I used it with several acoustic bass guitars. Last one is my Taylor AB-1 with an upgraded Fishman VTB Active Volume & Tone Controls. The JDV is an excellent, uber clean DI.

I used the JDV in this video I made of How to Record Acoustic Bass Guitar.
