random pickup question

Discussion in 'Pickups & Electronics [BG]' started by JacksonsMen, Feb 8, 2006.

  1. would it be possible/worth it to rotate the pickups 90* on a bass and still get a decent sound? like, take two P style pickups and mount them side by side (longways) in the same position, just long ways instead of horizontally......just a thought:bag:

    I don't think that's a good idea.

    Hi all,

The short answer is, yes, this is possible.

Essentially, all pickups are just coils of wire around magnet(s).
The direction they're in does not affect the essential function.

The tone will be affected significantly, since the multiple
poles will all be reading one string at different points. You
will end up with some major midrange cancellation, just as
you get with the two-poles-per-string on a humbucker.

The bigger issue with a P-style pickup is that they're too
wide...you couldn't fit 4 side by side without a really wide
    string spread.

You could lay 4 J-pickups side to side...:p

Why you would do it is a separate question entirely, except
to have separate outputs for each string, which is seldom

    Been there done that.

Only I used 3 Jazz pups (4th wouldn't fit, screw towers get in the road). Senses too much of the string and it's just tonal mud.

Under Dimento's J pup experiements in the FAQ section
  6. i didnt mean one pup per string rather use 2 pups per 4, and arange the pup so that it picks up both strings......

it was just something i thought about while trying to sleep the other night, just curious
