image.jpg Came across this hodad bass can’t find any info on it. It’s a Korean made hodad, with humbuckers and a crazy blue sparkle finish. Bought off a store on reverb. It was damaged on arrival but I kept it. I’ll post some pics. If anyone has any info on it please share it with me.

    Thanks

It's a Hodad alright. Definitely not a rare bass though... not sure how you arrived at that conclusion. :D Mass made, inexpensive, marketed around 20 years ago. :) Talkbass has quite a few threads on them.

  3. not with double humbuckers tho

Hmm, that is a good point... perhaps this is a rarer dano than I first thought. :)

  5. It could be a guitar body. I think the necks interchanged on that series.

That's super rad. Congratulations! Interestingly enough, it looks like that combo of finish, pickups, and control layout is pretty common for Hodad guitars. However the pickup spacing is different, along with bridge placement and neck of course. If that's a 34" scale, I'm totally jealous and I think that's the Dano I'd most like to own myself. I have a "'63 Long Scale" which is pretty cool in its own right, but not as cool as double lipsticks and sparkle finish!

Ya it’s crazy, can’t find anything on it. The guitar shop I bought it from claims it’s a “one off” finish for a hodad bass, but what really got me was the double lipstick set up, never seen that on a bass. The shop obviously had dropped the bass and sent it as new for an insurance scam with reverb. It was shipped in some really poopy cardboard and I knew they were scamming for insurance purposes. I kept it tho and I’ll fix the crack after I get some money up.

  9. Right you are! Whatever the provenance of that bass, it’s pretty cool!

Guys, is 'Hodad' a model mane or a slang term I've not heard in this context before?

    It's the model name.

The word "Hodad" is a slang term used to describe a surfer "wanna-be." A hodad may own a surfboard and may even haul that board to the beach, yet never actually surfs.

So I guess a Hodad bass is one somebody buy, brings to a gig, but never actually plays.

Thanks for that JD. I've never heard the term here around surfers and my wife surfed from 6 until just before she passed and most of our social set were beach people and surfers as we lived about 100m from the sand.

Both my wife and my brother tried to encourage me to surf, but I never did. I'm just about to move back to the country, right near the beach and my brother has given me one of his surfboards, and promised to buy me a custom if I get any good. I might have to get a HODAD T shirt made for myself and see who laughs at it now.

I suck, but nobody really notices
    It's a Dan electro

Wait, yeah it might actually be a guitar. Those only come in 2 or 3 pickups as basses. Trip

  16. yea no as you'll see later in teh thread where a pic of the guitar version is side by side with it.

the bass version has the bridge where it should be for a bassist.

  18. Seems pretty rare in that pickup configuration and that blue sparkle finish.
I used to own one of the 3 pickup Hodads made around the same time. (pictured).
Really curious about the lipstick humbuckers on yours!
Congrats, that’s a very cool bass.

  19. Dis guy hated water. One day a guy that was a surfer staying with us was just coming in and my grandson jumped on his board and started to paddle around. Andrew asked if he wanted to learn to surf, he said yes. So Andrew pushed him in on a little roller and he got up on it and road it in, turned around and paddled back to him, pushed in again and caught another. The third time, he paddled in himself and caught it also :)
The next day, he rented a board and has never looked back. This is him the next day :)

Awesome DJ B. You can see the joy in his smile. Thanks for sharing and tell him he's now encouraging this old fart to get into it as well. Bless.
