I took that picture at NAMM 2001. For more info go to:

Michael Tobias was extremely friendly and went out of his way to allow me to try out that instrument. It was probably the best sounding bass I ever played. Probably partially due to the LightWave optical pickups.

That looks like the bass I checked out last summer, fred. It was sweet.

Mike was talking about the impending LW equipped bass...there it is.

Oh dear GOD!! Those are beautiful. I would rob like ten liqour stores for that baby. J/K. How did you play that with out the pickups being there to rest you thumb on. Did you just not put your thumb on or use a pick.

Can't speak for anyone else but I don't anchor my thumb in any particular place. I rest in on the lower (than the string I'm playing on) string or sometimes don't rest it at all. Takes a little practice, pays off big time on a 5 string and up.

There is a thumbrest on this Lightwave.

BTW you don't have to rob ten liquor stores...just one with lots of cash

j/k, don't try this at home, etc.

  6. OPTICAL PICKUPS??!?!?...never heard that one before...and you don't need pickups to rest your thumb on all the time!!!...if you've played an acoustic bass...there is no pickup or anything to rest yer thumb on...you get used to it...i find myself sometimes not using the pickups on my bass to rest my thumb on...TELL ME ABOUT THOSE OPTICAL PICKUPS AGAIN???

  7. Check out:

for more info. They sounded awesome! Unfortunately, I don't think they have any plans for making a 7-string version. Otherwise I would have ordered them for my upcoming 7-string fretless.
