Has anyone ever had their bass refinished in a different color? How much did it cost? Does it affect tone or anything?

Re-finishing does not affect the tone as a general rule.

Arguable the best in the business is Pat Wilkins at www.wilkinsguitars.com. He does or has done work for PRS, Anderson, Sadowsky, etc, etc. Check his site and it's amazing the number of clients.

Go to my pics link below. Pat re-finished my tigers eye mega-quilt PRS guitar from purple and changed the mahogany back, neck, and headstock finish from opaque black to translucent cherry. He got PRS to reapply the headstock logo. Pat also kept the fauz maple binding. It cost several hundred dollars but if you want the best, he is the man.

This might sound a little wierd but check out car refinishing places. Ive heard of people getting their basses painted there before.
