Thanks for the advice, & letting me know what I'm in for. Just a few more weeks in the jazz ensemble playing trombone, & I'm ready to try URB. Found a rental at String Bass Shop (SF area), know a good teacher. Question: is there anything I should consider when I look at this rental? I'm 5'7"-- is there a max for the length of the fingerboard?

Just bring up your size concerns with your teacher. A average sized/shaped 3/4 bass with a 42" string length or less should be very do-able unless your personal specs are too far to the left of the bell curve -- very small hands, etc.
