Went by gui**** Center today to trade couple of pedals, and I saw an olllllld man (hunched over, walking slllllow, long-sleeve plaid shirt from around 1979 even though it was 95* outside, note the distinctive pleather old-man shoe in the top-left of the second picture) creeping towards a pickup truck, shuffling along with an ollllllld Fender bass case. I asked him if there was anything inside, and lo and behold.... the Jazz you see here. It's a refinish in not-so-good black, and he said it was originally a sunburst. He said he bought it new at a Little Rock music store "around 1967 or 1968, or it might have been around 1970, or maybe 1971..." He took 5 minutes trying to remember when he had it refinished, which he finally guessed was about 1980. When I asked him, he said that was the only time the neck has been off of it. It seemed to be a real lightweight, lighter than the Geddy and American Standard I goofed off with when I went into GC. Or maybe it's just that such a holy object as the old man's original is drawn towards the heavens and therefore gravity has less pull on it. Said he's trying to sell it, looking for $3,000 because that's what someone told him it was worth " a few years ago." At least I can say I played the opening riffs to Limelight and Red Barchetta on it..... and it felt pretty damn good.
Is that a poly neck with a lacquer spray over the decal that has darkened with age? At first I thought it was a Jazz Special from the color. Bass has a cool vibe, but I can't see it being 3K worth of vibe. As a refin I believe dtraxe is pretty close.
That bass has seen some really smokey bars judging by the exteme darkening of the headstock face as well as the very yellowed pickguard edges. 2-2200 in my book.
