    Hi folks,

I know these Yamahas have been discussed much on talkbass and I did find something with the search but since I know there are many fellow bassists who have had both these instruments, I am asking whether there is a significant sound difference between these basses?

John's sound has changed at the same time he made the switch from JP to JP2. On the newer albums it's much softer than before but I also have read that he's changed to half-round strings and probably just rolled down the treble a bit too :)

The clips on youtube of the JP2 I've seen have shown that JP2 can sound fantastic but does it have the same aggressive kind of tone that's audible on many clips with TRBJP or older TRB6 (with narrow pickups, mid 90's)? I know the preamp is a bit different and the mid control is sweep rather than 3-way.

I'm extremely qurious about this to. For the moment I have a JP2 which I love, but the more I listen to videos with the JP1 I start to think that one would fit me even better soundwise. I really like that edgyness, like in this video: Debra Killings 03 - Surrender - YouTube

I also have short fingers so I guess 34" scale would fit me better than 35" too.

Please if you have experienced both basses, share your thoughts!

    Cheers //Oskar

Well, since my first post I've managed to find a JP, and it really does have an aggressive character in the lower register, if you want to. Very nice sounding indeed. But I still haven't played a JP2 so I can't tell and I haven't gigged with the JP yet. I've never even seen one.

But the slightly mellower sound of the JP2 is very nice indeed, I just heard Patitucci live and the sound was clear and punchy with a great bottom end.

I have the TRBJP2 and previously had the TRBJP1 and there is a difference in the sound of the two basses. You can dial in a "phatter" sound with the TRBJP1 than you can with the TRBJP2. At least that was my recollection, it's been a couple of years since I had them both at the same time.
