    Hi everyone,

I have a bit of a dilemma, and I would like to tap into the wisdom here to try to solve it.

Right now I have two 80s MIJ P-Basses, one with a rosewood board strung with flats and a Nordstrand pickup, and the another with a maple board. I've always wanted to have a Mustang bass, but whenever I was in the market they were a bit above what I could afford at the time. However, I went into the local music store yesterday and found a used Mustang in mint condition that has a heavenly neck.

Here's my dilemma: right now I can't justify having more than two basses, nor can I afford to purchase another one. I could afford to trade off one of the P-Basses and some cash for the Mustang. Are there any mustang owners out there who would do this, or do you think it would be better to hang on to the two P-Basses? If any Mustang owners have any thoughts on this that would be excellent!

Thanks in advance for the help, I very much appreciate it!

do you know when the mustang was made by any chance? also, what music do you play? i'm interested as well in other peoples responses and can definately understand the dilema you're in. Every bass player.... well, almost every bass player goes through this "process" during some point.

  3. I have a hard time switching from long scale and short scale often. So i only use short scale basses. You may not have the trouble i do. But is some thing to keep in mind!

It's a CIJ S-series, and according to the Fender dating page it is a 2006-08. We do a lot of rock spanning multiple decades, so it's nice to have a bass with flats and rounds. I'd keep rounds on it I think for song when I don't need a bass with flats. However, I may end up putting flats on it as well.

I think the mustangs are totally worth the asking retail price! with that in mind, instead of taking the hit on the trade, if I were you I would take my time and sell the CIJ p bass here. They are highly sought after and Im sure you can get at least 500-650 if not more for it here.
Mustangs will come and go and you can wait for them to pop out again. Or I bet a talkbass member will be more than happy to trade their mustang for one of your p basses without you adding cash on top.

    Out there!
I have no trouble doing so, but then, I also play guitar. :)

The mid '90s CIJ Mustang I had for a while was a fantastic instrument, especially so, with TI Jazz Flats on it. :bassist:

If you really like the Mustang, buy it. Then put in a set of the new Nordstrand replacement pickups for the Mustang. It will sound as big as your P bass. Maybe bigger. Fantastic pickup.

I may have to do just that...

I've had some bad luck selling on eBay, so I tend to stay away from trying to sell the bass on my own as opposed to turn it in for credit towards a new one. And I know that TB members are light years better people to work with than some eBayers, but I'm still a bit wary.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I just may pull the trigger!

Oh yeah, I agree they're worth the price, it's just that that price was above what I was able to spend at the time.

I bought Nordstrand pickups for one of my P-Basses at Best Bass Gear:

They were above-and-beyond helpful in giving me recommendations!

I really,..really,..really,..really,.. want a mustang, but I have to get a good price to make it happen. What do you thing of the Mikey Way? The price is right on these, but I don't know how they compare to a Fender. I don't like the looks of the VM's, and really could do without the silver flakes on MW mustang.
