I'd like to get a nice microphone to use for recording during practice sessions. Ideally, I'd like to find something with a short cable so I can keep my iPad or iPhone close at hand to start and stop the recording, but allow me to place the microphone 5 to 10 feet away. Ideally I'd like something that works with the iPhone but isn't so specific to my current phone that I'd need to replace it when I upgrade my phone.

What do other people use for recording during practice sessions?

Apple specific, but I use the Apogee MiC.
