    i'm familiar with the recording forum but think this is in the right place. if not feel free to move it.

    working on my band's demo last night i was using the xlr thru output on my mackie m1200 power amp. whenever i plugged in an xlr cable, output to my amp was cut dramatically (to less than half original) and the sound being sent to the mixer was very soft and distorted.

    this is my setup:

    fender am V w/ active electronics ->
    aguilar db924 pre ->
    boss bass eq ->
    Mackie m1200 ->
    Yamaha 4ch mixer ->
    HD Recorder

    I'm also using some effects but these don't affect this problem.

    the mixer has phantom power; i thought this could be an issue but still have the same problem after turning PP off.

    any ideas? i know we could use a better recording setup but we're trying to do this on the cheap... any help would be much appreciated.
