Let me first say that I completely understand, the mics in a smartphone likely cost less than a penny, so I shouldn't expect much...

But does anyone else experience smartphone-recorded vocals sounding way out of tune? During the show, the singer is just killing it and the smartphone makes the vocals sound as if she wasn't able to hear herself in the monitors. ... just WAY out of tune.

    Anyone else experience this?

No I haven't noticed anything sounding out of tune on my iPhone 4S. I use the stock earbuds to record with though. The mic on the earbuds is much much better than the mic on the phone itself.

Plug the iphone into the PA and crank it
Does it still sound out of tune?

It is probably something else out of tune, at the similar frequencies that your phone reproduces or where the singer is singing.

Your singer is out of tune. An iPhone will not alter her pitch.

The device is a Droid Razr Maxx.

She wasn't out of tune when I recorded her. Believe me, I am the MOST critical of the band.

I will try to crank it tomorrow when all are awake.
