Hey all - don from D'Addario here. Today we announced the world's first Guitar String Recycling program.

The recycling program is called "Playback" and it rewards you for recycling ANY brand of used strings, not just ours. Shipping the strings back to us is prepaid - all you have to do is print out the label - slap it on a box. Please note that this is a very new initiative and currently only available in the US.

You can learn more about it here - Playback - The World's First String Recycling Program

I was extremely excited... until I read that it is only open to Americans.

Can I just send you my strings without a reward? I'd just like to do the right thing here, I don't need an incentive. I have been unable to find a needy recipient for my old strings, nobody I know travels to Cuba or anywhere difficult to obtain strings.

I love the idea, by the way.

We hope to expand this to Canada at some point but we don't have a timeline as of yet. If you really want to take on that undertaking, you can send them to me at the factory.

Don, would it be better to include any string packaging or no? Should they be separated into sets in case they can be re-used on an instrument or does that matter?

  9. This is great! I am really excited to be able do this. I have a box full of strings and will sign up and send them ASAP!

I was just thinking yesterday about how much steel I've sent into the landfill in the form of old strings. I'm very excited to hear that D'Addario is taking this on! I have several old sets around the gear room that I will now be sending in.

You can certainly send back any of the packaging that you'd like to include. We've also been contacted by a great many international players. There have been requests to send strings back to us, regardless of a person's location (Canada, Poland, Germany and more). The fact of the matter is, the carbon foot print that it would generate, to ship all those strings back to us, would probably prove those strings moot. We have plans to expand the program in the future, so we'd like to request that international players - SAVE YOUR STRINGS. We will have a solution in the future. Thanks for your support for this new program. Tell your friends, become an advocate!

    Kudos for starting this program!
I'm from Denmark, but I will start saving my strings from now on.
Do you know if anything is starting to take shape in regards to an international solution?

I use this program all the time. Pretty cool and you can get some more strings or swag with the points you earn. Also big props to Don Dawson and D'Addario for excellent strings and service. Everyone should give their strings a try!

We recently added the UK to Players Circle and are working on the recycling part of the program. It's far more involved and unfortunately it does take time to make sure that it's a practical process for each country. Thanks for your interest and I'll be sure to pass your comment along to our brand team.

Any updates on Canada? I sent my last two boxes down South to one of your partners. I collected enough weight that I had to pay for priority shipping. No good deed goes unpunished, ha ha.

We're going to be adding Canada as part of our Players Circle program first. This will happen hopefully in the next 8 to 10 weeks. We have also been speaking with our recycling partner concerning the countries that are currently involved in Players Circle - that is how we provide access to the Playback to players. They can print shipping labels and such for recycling. I'll ask if there's a time line for adding the Recycling portion of our program. HOpefully it won't be much longer after getting Players Circle up and running,.
