I have a sunburst p-lyte circa '95 that I am having the frets taken out of. I have replaced the original pickups with EMGs, otherwise it is the same as when I bought it (except for a refret, which won't matter now heh!). Has anyone else out there taken the frets out of one of these? I am trying to figure out how this thing will sound...

The weird thing about that bass is when I bought it, it sounded awesome. Exactly the tone I wanted, with stock Fender pickups. Then something happened - it got darker, more muddy, and started to lack that clear, deep tone it used to have. So I put the EMGs in (I have also had it refretted, but only cuz I wore them out). The odd thing is everyone I know who has this bass (three people) has noticed the same thing. The fender pickups seem to 'wear out' or something...

Anyway, yeah its in the shop right now since its a backup bass at this point. They are filling the fretholes with white acetate. The guy said those EMGs sound really good fretless. HE seemed excited. So I am optimistic. I will let you know how it turns out....
