I just picked up a 73 Fender Telecaster bass that someone had sprayed a coat of black spray paint over the original blond finish. Is there any way to safely remove the spray paint without damaging the original finish underneath?
  2. What kind of paint are we talking about ?

if it's water-based paint, it's easy.. if it's alchohol based.. munchos problemos..

best thing to do is bring the bass to a good paint-store, where they can give you advice.
  3. U should be able to scratch off a coat of Latex waterbased paint with your thumb nail fairly easyly if it is over a clearcoat, several mild paint removers would probably work to get that off although you would probably be best off asking a luthier or even an art restoration place their opinion on which one.
Oil based paint on the other hand would probably be best to have done profesionaly unless your going to strip the whole bass. Try a little nail polish remover on a hidden spot, be warned that will take off the clearcoat underneath or at least fog it.
