I just acquired some old single coil pickups sans magnets. Anybody know where to score the Alnico 5 magnets that are on old fender jazz pickups (under the bars, glued to the bottom). The only hit I'm getting on google requires a 75$ order.
The pickups that had magnets on the bottom used ceramic magnets. The pickup with AlNiCos, had the magnets as pole pieces. Those pickups can't be that old, they didn't make them that way until the Mexican made basses. The old Fender pickups had AlNiCo pole pieces. There's two kinds of pickups with steel poles and ceramic magnets. The better ones had the poles protruding from the bottom, and used two magnets, one of each side. The cheap ones had the steel poles flush on the bottom and used a fairly weak ceramic magnet. A 5 string Jazz pickup with the two ceramic magnets
Well what would be the best replacement alternative? It would be nice to rewind these and put some nice magnets on them. Should I replace the poles or just do a ceramic on the bottom?
I don't think it's worth rewinding them. You might find some magnets, but they wont sound as good as the alnico versions. I have a lot of the same style Strat pickups that people gave me when I replaced their pickups. They aren't great pickups.
