I may need to replace the pick up in Ampeg Dan Armstrong bass. I don't exactly have the money to buy a vintage replacement (at least not right now anyway). What cheaper pickup(s) would come closest to putting out the sound this instrument was intended to have?

There's nothing out there that replaces these pickups, cause they have two different coils on top of each other. Back in the eighties, we re-wound such a pickup. It was not so hard to do. You just chip away at the (brittle) putty til you have the parts loose. They are almost DIY pickups. We rewound using a record player! 33 1/3 RPM means a 100 winds every 3 minutes. The re-wound pickup sounded better than the original...

You can also place other pickups on or onside something that will simply fit.

But why not contact Kent Armstrong? (Dan's son)
He designed the pickups for the re-issues. He may have suggestions.

Or simply put a re-issue pickup in the bass.

    Good Luck!
