Looking to replace the stock pickups in my CIJ Geddy Lee with ones with more low end while keeping the growl of the originals. Thinking of either Fender Pure Vintage ‘74s or Aero Type Is. Recommendations?
Those are Fender Originals or Fender 62's, same pickup different name. Definitely a growly set but definitely light on lows. I put a set in my 72 Jazz when the original pickups became too noisy to deal with. I've owned over 20 jazz sets and to me the only set that keeps that high/high mid growl with good bass response is Nordstrands. The Fender 74s are ok but I found them way less articulate than the Nords. The Aeros are very transparent and were just alright to me. If you're looking for a pickup with character there are better choices.
I agree, and happen to like the fender 62's in my 1998 CIJ Geddy Lee. I am curious though, what Nordstrands you like that have the high high mids and good lows.?
I had tried a set of Antiquity’s (Is) in the bass and swapped them back out for the originals. Lost too much growl.
I already use Rotosounds and tried out a bunch of different strings about a decade ago and came back to the Rotos - short life but nothing sounds quite like them. Same issue with the pickups - everything I tried was just too polite.
60s. The 70s were a bit too mid-shy for me. 60s singles were deep with plenty of high mid clank. I have them in a USA Geddy and man do they cut.
Interesting - this is what Nordstrand said: Thank you for your interest in Nordstrand and I apologize for the lag in getting back to you. I was out of the shop for a couple of days and am just catching up with email now. Thanks for your patience! If you really want the most growl, I definitely recommend the 70’s wind. The 60’s wind will get you a hair more in terms of low frequency response, but they don’t have the same growl as the 70’s wind. Please let me know if that’s a help or if you have more questions, either about these models or about anything else in the J series and I’m happy to answer! Thanks again for contacting us and I hope we can help you get the sound you want,
I would call Lindy Fralin and describe to him what your looking for, likely as not you will get him personally on the phone, he can custom wrap them to get the desired outcome.
I have a set of vintage 74s in a cij Geddy Lee. They are ok. When I got the bass the bridge pickup was not working, so I gutted it and ran all new electronics. I started with a set of seymore QPs, and while thick and growly, it wasn't exactly what I was looking for. I replaced them with the Fender 74s. I figured that was about as close to a stock 70's bass as I could get, which I assumed what what Geddy was running. I use DiAddario Pro Steels 45-105, and while the bass sounds good, it's still not exactly what I'm looking for. I honestly think my ear is more tuned to the 60's pickup placement, as that's what I've played mostly. Regardless of pickup, this bass seems a little thin to me. It has a great sound, and is perfect for funk and slap, which is what I have it set up for now. Just make sure before you go down the pickup rabbit hole that it's not the 70's spacing that is throwing you off. Just trying to save you money (a forbidden concept here at TB)
The Mojotone website says that Tom Brantley was working for them when Geddy had his pickups rewound. Looks like I need to try a set of his pickups.
