i'm looking to replace the pups and eq on my ibanez bass. should i get bartolini or nordstrand pups?

and for eq, bartolini, or splurge and get a john east u-retro preamp?

or, would maybe going passive and getting a villex pickup set be a cool idea, with Volume-Blend-Tone-Tone-Mids?

    help me out pals.

    it's a P/J setup, btw.

the first thing I would consider is keeping the old parts and insuring the mod is 100% reversable because you're talking about an upgrades worth more than the bass.

You also need to know what sound you want to decide on what you want and theirs no indication of that here, just the opposite. Some manufacturers have a signature sound but most manufacturers make pups geared for specific applications and their own pups can sound as different from each other as from another manufacturer.
