Retiring to perform regularly: Where?

  1. I'm looking for some suggestions from far-flung folks who know local areas well and don't mind sharing. I live on Cape Cod, a nice resort area, where I teach school. I'm basically a part-time free-lancer, and I double on EB and URB. I read well enough to play shows, and play (and enjoy) lots of different styles. That's allowed me to play gigs I like more frequently than since I left the Boston scene, where I was once very busy, playing over 100 gigs a year for awhile.

In about five years, it will make sense for me to retire, and the Cape is pretty expensive. I'm wondering what my alternatives are, as I've been thinking about moving when I retire. I will almost certainly downsize, as my income will be lower. I'd like to live somewhere near a university, possibly, in a town big enough to do a bit of tutoring and lessons on the side.

    Any suggestions or thoughts? Thanks!
