my big band tunes to A440 while my orchestra(and everyone else) tunes to A442 - which means that my bass is constantly retuned. Lately, the tuning has been unstable as h***. Is this just correlation, or is there a causal relationship?
  2. This is a minimal detuning, shouldn't so any harm.
A temperature or climate change might has a larger impact.
Might also depend on the strings. Gut core strings can detune wildly, specially wound strings, steel and synthetic core strings re not climate dependent and detune less with a temperature change.

Check your neck and the tailgut (might slip).

My instruments can detune themselves that much with a weather change, and it doesn't seem to affect overall tuning stability. Are you using unusual strings?

I agree that a sudden change in stability could indicate something going on with the instrument. Does it generally detune flat or sharp?

I feel for you. Look up some viola jokes on the net, have a few chuckles, then retune.
