Most of us diehard Rick-O-philes are quite familiar with this bass. I am still debating with myself as to whether I want to create (more or less) a negative version with my Snowglo Laredo. I won't change out the location of the bridge pickup as I am not interested in any major work, mostly just pickguard, and maybe controls.
This was not a production model, but an experiment. There's a fuzzy shot of what is supposedly Led Zeppelin with JPJ wielding this bass. It has been said that this was a prototype for the 4004 series or the 4002, but I don't see much resemblance to either model other than the body shape. But I DO like it!
Not really. My old 4005WB has pickups in basically the same location, actually, the bridge pickup is a bit closer to the saddles than the one on that 4001. It produced a nice burpy, Jaco-esque tone solo'd. With both pickup it had very classic Rick tones and the neck pickup solo'd was nice and dubby.
This bass just serves to remind me how much I love the 4004L in black. Still, the teardrop control plate is unique and different.
I think moving each pickup 1" closer (to each other) would not only look better, but probably get more useful sounds too. Sort of close to what the company did when they "dropped " the pickup positions on the 4004 models for a few years. (Like my maple '04 Cii pictured) Overall,i really like the look of that bass!
It is a customised '04 Laredo bass. The pickups were moved to the same positions as a 4002,and a lot of surgery was done, hence the need for a big Pickguard. I love the synergy of this bass, with the 50's style pickguard, and modern pickups, upgraded electronics, etc. Here is a better picture.
