Check out this sweet video of the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Did you see how sweet Rick Laird's bass is there? Where did he get a Fender jazz with a humbucker? I'd would like toget one now.

Any idea on how to go about that? Steal a humbucker from a violin bass or something? Fill me in, I don't know these kind of things......

    Thanks in advance.
  2. Cool video. Thanks for posting it. Looks to me like Laird is playing a Precision modified with a (Gibson bass?) pickup right below the neck. It's most likely a custom modification.
  3. That's a superb clip, pity Laird is inaudible...
The end credits show it to be a BBC production, the whole concert has to available somewhere!

That's from a 30min performance recorded for the BBC. It was repeated on BBC Four last year when the 'Jazz Britannia' series aired.

Rick switched from the Precision to a transparent Dan Armstrong bass by the time of 'Birds of Fire'.

    Indeed....oddly similiar to Billy Sheehan's bass. :D
  7. Dammit - missed it. Perhaps they'll be good enough to repeat it.

Could that be done to a jazz bass?
