Any of my fellow TB'ers have first hand experience with one of these rare Riks?

I was at a blues jam last night and an older dude walked in around midnight with one of these. He said he's owned it since new, back in 1972. He had installed a P-bass pickup at the neck, but it was otherwise stock. I've never seen one of these before, it was a real beaut. His was this exact color.

wow I like that... I'm not a Ricky fan but that is nice and smooth...
  3. I would say that if he's put a P pickup in it and most likely routed it for this - he's just waved goodbye to a large chunk of cash.

These basses are very sought after by Rick enthusiasts and if any of them are reading this they are probably shaking their heads and saying "nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo"

They came in 4, 6 and 8 string versions.

It wasn't routed for the P pickup, he merely mounted it to the top in place of the original neck pickup. $15k is a TON of cash for that bass. I was on my way out, so I didn't stick around to hear the bass in action. In hindsight, I should have.

    Greetings from the North,

If you wanna hear what one sounds like, look for the band named 'Spirit'. Album name 'The Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus'. There's a song called 'When I Touch You'. Turn it up it's the richest Ric sound you'll ever hear, bar none.

Is that the bass he plays on the rest of the album? If so, it really is the richest Ric sound I've ever heard. The octaves before the verse in Animal Zoo particularly.:hyper:

The Rick 4005 approach: semi hollow w/ pickups at the extremes (right at the neck and bridge) -- would be an interesting approach for a project or custom bass.

Or heck, even on a solid body. I'm thinking a p-bass body with darkstar pickups at the neck and bridge. Or an ibanez artcore...

..an approach for those of us without 10k!

    It sure does sound great.

In a solidbody version, that sounds alot like a Lakland Jerry Scheff model.

Mani from the Stone Roses used to use a slightly... ahem... customised one. Never thought musch of his tone, tbh.

In theory, it would describe a Lakland Decade, too.
