I was looking at a 1973 4001. It has, what I thought were the proper closed back Grover tuners. The back of the tuners are smooth and not marked Grover USA. I thought these were replacements, but the owner believes they are original. The rest of the bass checks out. Any thoughts on the tuners?

If they don't have "Grover" on them, they ain't Grovers. Either they were the oriental copies replacing the originals, or the entire bass is an oriental copy. Photos would help.

R4001-4.JPG Paul is absolutely right. These are the real deal, genuine ones on my made-in-Oct.'73 4001. If they don't look like this? they ain't Wavy Grovers...

If you think they're replacement get him down a few hundred if you can. You can find them although not cheap, I have a few in a box at home in MA I've had for years. KI will see them on ebay here and there although not usually a whole set. In fact I just found four on ebay just now, single tuners.

I'll see if I can get a pick of them. My 74 has actual Grovers, and these don't look right. I thought I would check to see if anyone was familiar with them. Think I'll play safe route and pass. Thank You for the help.

Interestingly, the MIJ copies of the Grovers did not explode!

The original ones were kind of riveted together (not rivets but on the same idea, some people were able to fix them years ago), the only Ric part I remember exploding was the R tailpiece on a 4005!

Do you have any photos? Would be easy to tell that way, Grover made two different types I believe, made some flat ones for Rics also although they were earlier than the wave Grovers.

They were 'pop on', IIRC. I managed to fix one set but it involved Araldite.

I have one or two open ones at home, I'll have to try that, thanks.

FWIW, I fixed them in situ, as it were.

The bass that came with them, a Jetglo 72 4001FL is long gone unfortunately.

Reading this thread, I'm almost compelled to look for the Japanese, non-exploding copies. The "real deal" wavys on my '74 are opening up. :crying:

I did some research, and found they were made by Teisco in Japan. Not worth it. I have 3 Ric basses already. I was just thinking about adding another (not the likeliest option being an old married guy) or possibly trading to get another in jetglo. Thank y'all again for your help.
