Alright, in a few weeks I'm getting a new rig. I was originally going to get a Gallien Krueger 800RB and some Traynor cab whose model name eludes me at the moment. Anyways, I ended up finding a sweet deal on an SVT 610-HLF. I'm not missing the chance to score an Ampeg cab, lol. I have that on hold now. I'm no genius when it comes to electrical matters (Or lets say, I'm not even competent, haha), and I've got a few questions. Running a 300W head through a 600W cab is bad thing from all sources I've heard and read, is there any truth to that? I don't mind upgrading to a different head, but I'm not overflowing in the cash department either. Would something like a GK 700RB-II head, which runs at 480W low freq, and 50W high freq be a good head to go with? I think that is in my price range. If not, are there any other recommendations? Thanks for your time Octavarian
If you turn up the pre-amp enough to be clipping all the time, I read on TB that it can damage the speakers. http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=345668
The 800,700 11 or the 1001 11 would be fantastic into 610HLF,with no damage done though the 50 watt amp on the newer GKs biamp section would be useless, you would not be dissapointed GKs go very well with Ampeg cabs
I think the only reason that people say that you can blow a high powered cab with a low powered amp is because of clipping. As long as you keep both the input gain and master from clipping then I don't think there is a way to blow out a cab by "under powering." Of course I may be wrong, but that is just the way I understand it.
Assuming a 300W head is loud enough for your playing think of it this way: If you bought a 600W head, and turned it down roughly half way, would it hurt the cab?
Clipping per se isn't the problem. The OVERpowering, or the overexcursion, that a clipping amp *may* (but doesn't necessarily) generate is the problem. (Both of these things can also be generated by amps that are not clipping in the slightest.) No cab was ever burnt out by being fed less power than it would take to damage it.
No offense, but you should read around a little more. There are a *ton* of threads right here on TalkBass that debunk that.
Haha, yeah man. For having played almost 6 years, I really need to learn more about rigs, I've been too busy playing!
