totally stupid question, do i simply turn the phillips screws on my jazz pick ups to adjust the height or is it more involved than that?

Just turn the screws clockwise to lower the pickups - This will tighten the screws and push the pickups deeper into the body of the bass. Obviously, turn the screws counter-clockwise to raise the pickups. (When raising the pickups, you may have to pull up on them a little to get them to rise. There should be foam or springs under the pickup to push it up, but sometimes the foam is not so quick to rise after being compressed for some time).

Good luck with your pickup adjustments.
