Ringing Strings

Discussion in 'Hardware, Setup & Repair [BG]' started by Sojhen, Apr 27, 2003.

  1. :bawl: When i'm playing my bass it seems like almost always theres a ringing when the string vibrates... it's my belief that the bridge is too low and/or that the strings are vibrating against the frets... so have any advice..?

There are 3 factors that can cause fret buzz: string action, force you use to pluck the strings and quality of fretwork.

string action and fretwork are, of course, connected - better fretwork, lower action. i pluck strings quite hard and CANNOT go lower that 3-4 mm @ 12 fret - also, when playing with a pick I have to be very carefull.
    so.
get your frets leveled. or rise your action. or play soft, closer to the bridge - with a soft touch I can go as low as 2mm @ 12 fret...

btw - do you detune your bass?
