He switched to Piano (from guitar) after losing the tip of a finger on his left hand in a gun fight. I once had a conversation with a LA studio pianist who was checking out Dr. John's solo piano recordings - not just for the "notes", but for the "feel" - that mix of "in between straight-8th and swung-8th note" feel. Check out his Left Hand "time".... I don't think he did any "Duo" recordings with a bassist. (His group & vocal work is wonderful, as well - Right Place, Wrong Time, for example.) Thanks, Dr. J.
I feel like I got hit in the face with a brick. Ages ago when I was a reporter, I got sent to see him at a gig in Kingston, NY at a beautiful old theater. Got paid for it too. Not a bad living, right? Me being me, I snuck a few bottles of beer in and set them on the floor before I sat down. Me being me, I kicked one of them over halfway through the set. Everybody heard it. Whoops. When he was done, I grabbed his road manager and asked for an interview. The manager ran backstage to ask, and came back with a no. Mac was tired. I didn’t push. Came as close to meeting him as I did Seeger.
RIP - I heard 'Gris-Gris' when I was 16 and was like, *** is this music? But I bought the album and wore it out.
The Voodou spirits in Vilokan are partying tonight because they're getting a personal concert courtesy of the Night Tripper.
