Adios good sir. Thank you for the memories. Ian Holm, star of Lord of the Rings, Alien and Chariots of Fire, dies aged 88. -Mike
Awwww... well, he made it to "eight-eleventy" (or maybe that's "eleventy-eight") as a hobbit might say (not bad for a human).
What an actor! In addition to the above movies, he starred in The Sweet Hereafter, a heartbreaker of a movie, and had roles in several Kenneth Branagh movies I really liked, especially Henry V and Hamlet. Oh, and a long list of other good flicks, his filmography on Wiki is remarkable. Ian Holm - Wikipedia RIP.
Rest in peace, Sir Ian. I loved your many wonderful performances, but especially those in Alien (1979) and Garden State (2004).
He did some great acting as Ash in Alien, but I disliked the character - evil android following orders - Bishop was much more likeable (in the 2nd film). Both got torn apart, of course. (Bishop got the best line in the whole series imho - "Not bad... for a human" - after Ripley defeats the alien queen using the loader exoskeleton - great stuff).
Won’t repeat my whole post from the cult movies thread but Sir Ian was one of the most versatile actors we’ve ever had. Drama, comedy, fantasy, historical, you name it. The amount of great directors who cast him more than once is testament to his quality and range. Greatly missed.
"The road goes ever on and on, down from the door where it began. Now, far ahead the road has gone, and I must follow if I can." ~ Bilbo Baggins ( also sung by Gandalf )
Another one--condolences to his family & friends. His part in the Lord of the Rings movies wasn't huge, but great casting. It helped set up the story well.
