I had a special connection. In high school, my dance band backed him up at his act at the local fair. We also were the backing band for his wife's country show. Circa 1978. We also got to meet Dottie West and her band as we opened for them as part of one of our first comprehensive contracts. Here's a picture of us backstage with my guitar player. Looked a lot like his brother Dick Van Dyke. That's me holding the guitar, all of about 16 years old. VanDyke.

Another funny story about that. Jerry wanted a rehearsal with us the day of the show. We show up at the local Holiday Inn at 8am. Set up. In walks Jerry in a sweat suit, coffee and cigarette. Just a classic scene. The rehearsal went very well. Our guitar player was also an accomplished banjo player even at our young age. Jerry modified the part of his act where he whipped out his banjo to include my friend and both playing their banjos. (See the old Dick Van Dyke shows where he plays Dicks brother "Stacy" and plays his banjo). It was neat.
