Ripoff on bassgear?

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by bassteban, Nov 13, 2005.

  1. Has anyone seen the ad on bass gear entitled '5 string Stambaugh, not Fodera, Smith, Elri'? The pics look like a Fodera, as does the price($2999). Misprint or scam?

Looks like a killer bass to me and after reading a bit on the Stambaugh site and seeing pics I believe he has the ability to make that bass.

Here's a link to the site that really warrants a read by anyone considering a custom bass!
    http://www.stambaughdesigns.com/custphil.html

You might want to send an e-mail to Stambaugh with the pic of the bass and see what he has to say about it.
No doubt he'd remember if it was one he made. ;)

Does anyone here have a Stambaugh?

  3. I have one, soon to be two. Perhaps three(seriously). I have no doubt Chris could make a bass that would at the very least photograph that well, it's just that the ad seems a bit odd to me. Anyone else?

  4. Sweet, eh? I'll probably talk to Chris tomorrow- he's working on a 7 string for me. I'll mention the ad then.

$3k for a used Stambaugh? Why not just have Chris build you a brand new one for that price or less? Although you might wait awhile for the Mike Pope pre.

There's no doubt in my mind that Chris has the ability to make whatever you can think of.

All this Stambaugh talk is really killing me. :bawl:

I should have more progress pictures soon. :hyper:

That's definately one of Chris's basses. The price however is very high.

My thoughts exactly! Chris builds a killer instrument. I'll definitely be getting another from him sometime in the future!! Here's mine:

  8. It certainly could be, it just looks SoOo 'Fodera'(Faux-dera? )- the lower horn & knob layout in particular. But you so rarely see two Stammies that even remotely resemble each other, unless someone specs it that way! And that price- you'd have to throw all kinds of options in to get there; that & the wording of the ad make me wonder if it's from a non-English-speaker(no offense to anyone, it's just a bit confusing to me). Ah, well- I'll be calling the man in a few; perhaps then we'll know. :eyebrow:

I emailed the guy about the bass. He sent me a sound clip of it so I seems legit. The bass sounds rediculous.

So is that a good thing or a bad thing??

    :meh:

  11. I talked to Chris(who confirmed the bass as indeed his work)awhile ago- he had just talked to the guy a half-hour earlier. It was supposed to be a 'cheap' Fodera. :meh: I didn't ask why he might feel justified in asking 3 grand, though...

Edit: I think a ridiculous sound coming from a Stambaugh would definitely be a GOOOD thing. :D
