Lets see some pics of Rob Allen basses(specifically his MB-2 series). Please add any info and your comments. Anyone tried his Deep 5 Custom?
Well, I can't post a pic yet, but I ordered an MB-2 Fretless 4 string from Dave at Club Bass. I'm getting an alder body, with a 5A Redwood top, a maple neck, and a lined macassar ebony fretboard. I also orded the matching veneer on the headstock with binding. It should be here in about 3 weeks. Can't wait!!
I think they normally take 10-12 weeks, but I hi-jacked an order that Dave already had underway, so it reduced the build time to about 6-8 weeks. Dave has a few of Rob's basses in stock. One of his fretless basses through an iAmp350 and CXL112 is really something. Have you been to Club Bass before?
Yeah, I've been to Club Bass just not when I was in the market for a fretless. May be time to head down there again. Thanks for the info. Anyone else have Pics???
Hey ND, what's the difference between the 2 necks on the doubleneck? One looks like black tapewounds; is that it?
pretty much "right" neck -- Roto tapes (soon to be Status HotWire tapes ), Fishman Natural II, cocobolo & birdseye maple neck left neck -- TI Acousticores, Fishman Natural I, ebony/mahogany neck book-matched bluegum top/swamp ash bod
Here's a pic of one of my Rob Allen's: This bass is a RB-2 Limited Edition fretless with an alder body, curly redwood top, maple neck with a goncalo alves fingerboard
Here's a fretted RA I have. It has an alder body/walnut top & a walnut neck with a goncalo alves fingerboard. I might be selling this bass soon, I really hate to sell it but but I'm just playing my fretless basses nowadays.
What's up with the conjoined basses? You know they can fix that stuff with a very high success rate if they do the surgery to separate them early enough. And pretty good odd's that both can lead a somewhat normal life. If you wait till you take em home - they'll never be quite right.
But, then it Wouldn't be the Rob Allen of Doom(tm)... I seriously dig RAs, but am sufficiently and terminally broke (moreso with college coming up in the fall), so RAs are pretty much only a dream. Would like a fretless 5er with a redwood top, mahogany body, maple neck, and ebony fretboard. Mmmm.
somebody been watchin' the news agin lessee...#272 is a coupla' years old...another 27 she'll be 29 and... Don't feel bad there Shakespeare . Since the bottom fell outta' the tech market, I've yet to complete the amp rig for Charles & Mambo . Got any lucky lotto numbers so's I can get a Demeter power amp?
How do you play them w/o a thumb rest? is it difficult? I think they look neat, 'specially the double neck -Jon
To play without a thumb rest you would either: learn to play without using a thumb rest, use the top edge of the neck, or use the E (in some cases B) string. Well, here's my little beauty.
I rest my thumb at the end of the fingerboard. I've gotten so used to playing that way it's the only way I play bass now. The redwood RA I have I bought used and the previous owner used to rest his thumb on the top above the strings. Well you can see where he rested his thumb because the finish a little worn there. So I would not rest your thumb on the top itself.
