Role of bass in music?

Discussion in 'Miscellaneous [BG]' started by anton970204, Jun 2, 2003.

  1. I'm doing an oral presentation on the role of bass in music and I was wondering if you guys had any good sites I should visit or any other sources that I should look into. I'm going to play some songs as a demo, in different styles and such, if you guys have any ideas, please feel free to chime in.
    thanks a lot

    Ed Friedland said something profound about the function of the bass, but I think he appropriated it from someone else. Essentially, bass has three functions, each layered on top of the other:

    1) Establishes pulse;

    2) Defines the form of song;

    3) Defines the harmonic content of the song.

    If you lose sight of the chords, you can still keep the form. If you lose sight of the form, you can still keep the pulse. But whatever you do, don't stop playing, or you'll lose the pulse, which is the most basic function of the bass.
