rolling the thumb vs shifting (what is rolling the thumb?)

Discussion in 'Jazz Technique [DB]' started by mike_odonovan, May 25, 2003.

  1. i have been playing for about 5 years but i have read this "rolling of the thumb" in posts about fingering and i can't picture what you guys are refering to. i presume it is the left hand thumb. it seems to be mentioned for fingerings closer to the nut/scroll. what is it about?

It deals with pivoting/tilting the hand forwards or backwards to effectively achieve a half-shift of position without actually moving the thumb. The thumb instead becomes the pivot point for the rest of the hand and thus rolls *slightly*. Very useful in fast scalar passages.
