I've been listening to a "new" Ron Carter Nonet release called EIGHT PLUS. I say new because it was recorded in 1990 and apparently just recently released (Dreyfus Jazz label). I wouldn't call it a great album, although it certainly has it's moments. It is, definitely, a FUN piece of work. Fun to listen to, fun to play with! Carter is on Piccolo bass and Leon Maleson plays DB. Four cellos, piano, drums and percussion. I don't have a Piccolo bass (what exactly is that) but trying to play along really helps facility on the middle range of my DB. Or, take the low road and back the Piccolo. It's a gas. Man, can Carter groove! Rudy Van Gelder mixed.
