Got a call last week to sub for a band this weekend playing rootsy music like light rock, country, blues, and the like. Their usual bassist uses a Precision with old flats, and they've told me that they love his sound. So these are the two basses I've narrowed it down to using (plus Buffy, may she RIP). Both sound very similar, both are neck-thru-body with EMG actives, both have new rounds on them, and both have plenty of sustain for days. But do I want a 5-string to play those big low notes that would kill with their songs, or do you all think I'd better served by sacrificing the low notes and delivering some cool twangy string bending courtesy the 4 with the Kahler whammy? (Spoiler: see post 49)
Wouldn't place a lot of emphasis on the fact that the other bassist sound is well liked. They haven't heard you yet. I liked my second wife just fine until I met the third wife.
JimmyM, I thought you were mainly a four string P-bass guy. I know you had a Valley Arts Five, if my memory is clear. Are going five more these days?
Nope, never owned a valley Arts five. Only this one . Did use a 5 on a couple of gigs in March though. Anyway, yeah I have a couple Ps, but they suggested I use them and it makes me angry. How dare they try and tell me what to do!
Oughtta use a sunburst, tortoise rosewood P with dead flats,............................................ or either of the ones you have posted
This would be a perfect opportunity to dust off the BC Rich Mockingbird with fake blood splatter finish and upside down pentagram stickers. It'll create cross-genre appeal, trust me.
